The family name 'Kamer'
What's more irritating then finding out your name is spelled wrong? Example: my last name: Kamer. Translated into English it's nothing more then 'room'. Not a very hard word to spell, I guess. But still, most companies, civil servants, hospitals, etc. don't know their language. Or can't listen. My name is often spelled 'Kramer'. But why?
I found out that in The Netherlands there aren't many members of the 'Kamer' family, just 455 people in 2007. All of them got the family name by birth. Their mostly concentrated around Noord Holland and Utrecht
When I took a look at the family name 'Kramer', I founded out there were 13.532 people in 2007 with 'Kramer' as their last name (by birth). Therefore it's most likely that a civil servants thinks it must be 'Kramer' instead of 'Kamer'. But why do they think they know better than I do?
Another question is, whether the names 'Kamer' and 'Kramer' have a meaning, like the family name 'Brouwer' (Brewer), 'Smid' (black smith) of 'Schipper' (skipper). 'Kramer' is a trader or a persons wich sells things on a market. A very common way to make a living in the Netherlands back in the old days. The main reason we were an important country in the 18th century, because of our skills in trading.
'Kamer' on the other hand has the meaning of a circumference, a barn or little residence. Also I found words as barricade, fence or border section as an explanation of 'Kamer'. But who uses the word 'Kamer' nowday? Exactly, nobody. Same goes for 'Kramer', but there are much more persons in The Netherlands so the name 'Kramer' will not be soon forgotten.
Maybe this all is the reason many people spell my family name wrong. 'Kramer' is more commen than 'Kamer'. I hope I will becaume famous all over the world, so my name will never be forgotten and always will be spelled as it should be, 'KAMER'.
